I am just learning of Michael's passing when looking to see if I could connect with him again. I worked for Michael when he came on as the Principal at the Phyllis Susser school. He took over a very difficult situation and made it look effortless. At the time he started, I had just started my education as a school administrator. I would consider him to be the educational leader I aspire to be. I have often mentioned him as why I am how I am as a building leader. He helped get me the job I have now by preparing me for what I would need going into my interview. I am sorry to hear of this so late and I hope this message finds his family. I will do everything possible to honor his legacy as an educator by being an educational leader to others the same way he was for me.

My heart is shocked with the news of Michel’s passing and he will be missed by many people. When I came to Birch LIC as a T. A. Michael had just become an assistant principal and he came to me and said that, he believed in me, and that I had what it takes to became a special Ed. Teacher. He said”Lia, reach for the stars and you can count on me. I’ll support you in what you need it” Even today I treasure those words inside my heart. As an immigrant it was like USA was giving me a chance to going back to my professional field. Michael kept his promise showing me how to create IEPs, reports, go to meetings at DOE, talking to parents and so fourth . When I got my master degree in special education he was so emotional and we both cried …. and from there with him by my side everything fell in its place.
Not too long ago he visit LIC and told me “ I am glad to see you still here and I knew you would make it”.
Today I thank God that send Michael to my life. A person with a heart bigger than his chest always there to help somebody in need. Rest in peace my beautiful friend.

I’m still really shocked from my heart and Michael will be missed by many people. When I started to work at Westen Queens as TA, he was a teacher. Then he become an assistant principal and I became a Teacher and then he became a principal of our school. He was a very opened heart and always tells me and to everybody that Family is always first. You could always come to him with any personal or work issues and he would help you to find a solution. I would like to say “Thanks” to God that he gave me this opportunity to know Michael, to work with him and guide, understand and help me in many different areas. I pray to God for his soul rests in peace.

Back when it was WQDC, Michael taught in the room next to mine and for many years we started our morning off trading sarcastic remarks, he was just a bit sarcastic. But one day he was making a slime concoction for his class, and I told him exactly how to make it, except he did not listen to the directions I gave him, which I do not remember now, But he mixed the flour With glue and there was flour everywhere. His teacher assistant came to me, asking me to come over, and I see him covered with the flour and the glue so mad, more so that he had a huge mess to clean up and we know how much he did not like a mess (in all fairness, he didn’t not follow directions lol) We eventually did laugh about it. Michael will be missed for sure

Michael will be greatly missed. When I retired in September 2022 , I asked Michael what he was waiting for. Since he was just as old as me, but he laughed and said "No I'm not, I'm younger than you by three months! I thank him for always keeping my spirit up as he did for all those who knew him. Blessings and sympathy to all of his family. Sara Rochester

My first day at WQDC (as we used to be known as) I was complaining about all the stairs in a 4 story building when a Michael asked why I wasn’t using the elevator. I said I didn’t know there was one. He directed me to the basement to the back left corner and said I’d find the elevator there. I went looking. Searched the whole basement and found NO ELEVATOR. That was my first taste of Michael’s unusual sense of humor. Rest in Peace my friend.

Michael Claus was the best principal any school could have ever had. He was always understanding, always available to help with anything you needed and would always give you the best advise on how to handle a situation. Michael, you will be greatly missed, we missed you everyday since your departure at Birch Western Queens and we will now miss you eternally. May all your contributions and all the lives you touched stay alive and always remembered; condolences to the family.
