Berg, Mildred Irene, 93 of Mineola, NY, passed away peacefully at home on October 22, 2011. She was born on November 17, 1917, in Brooklyn, NY, the daughter of the late Elizabeth and Francis B. Lutz. Mildred was the eldest of two daughters, She attended NY City public schools and graduated from John Adams High School. Mildred later graduated from Pratt Institute with a degree in dietetics and nutrition. On June 29, 1941, she married Christian Berg, Jr. They resided in Rocky River, Ohio and moved to Mineola, NY in 1949. Mildred began her career at Lenox Hill Hospital and later spent many years working as a dietician at Winthrop University Hospital. After her retirement from the hospital, she enjoyed volunteering there. "Millie" was a long time member and great contributor to the Mineola chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. She held many positions within the organization. She was also a member of the Woman's Auxiliary and Woman's Club of the Willistons. As an active member of the Community Church of East Williston, she enjoyed participating in many church activities. Millie's passions included cooking, baking, and most of all, spending time with her family and grandchildren. She loved to travel and found Hawaii to be her favorite destination, enjoying many trips there with her late husband Chris. Millie will be missed by her son Russell E. Berg and his wife Anne, and daughter Leanne B. Hassett and her husband Mark E. Her grandchildren Brittany K. Hassett and Matthew C. Berg were the joy of her life. She provided them with wonderful memories of babysitting, cookies, and trips taken to watch them grow up. She is survived by her loving sister Elsa D. Carter of St Louis, Missouri. She was fortunate to spend her last years enjoying life with her companion, Thomas Vise. A Memorial visitation will be held at Weigand Bros Funeral Home 49 Hillside Ave., Williston Park, NY on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Memorial service will be Wednesday 10:30 am at The Community Church of East Williston (corner of High St and East Williston Ave.,) Flowers always made Millie happy. If you wish to honor her, buy a loved one a flower, or do as she did and become an organ donor. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to The Community Church of East Williston, The American Cancer Society or Hospice Care Network.
