Bob Browne posted a condolence
I was in Mr. Smith's Honors World History class at Brooklyn Tech. I did not relate to The Art of War (required reading), and was not yet a lover of history, but it was in his class where we eggheads had some of the best discussions and debates.
(I was 1 of the few conservatives, so it was a good challenge.)
I met him at BTHS' reunion in 2004 and introduced my wife to him at the 2006 one.
I recalled that I was in his class when the announcement came that Pres. Kennedy had been shot.
He wrote me later of the effect that Roosevelt's passing had on him--- as FDR was (virtually) the only Pres. he had known up to that point of his life.
How well I remembered him vs. some others is testament to the positive effect he had on me.
A privilege to have him as a teacher, and a pleasure to have re-met him years later.
(I have a picture of us from 2004.)
With sincere condolences,
Bob(Robert E.)Browne

I was a student in Mr. Smith's Honor's History Class during the spring term of 1976. At the time, I was trying to enter the U.S. Air Force Academy and I recall Mr. Smith saying in front of the class, words to the effect that it would be a waste of my talent. I didn't make it into the Academy, but years later, I entered law school and became a lawyer. Fellow class mate Nick Kallas and I attended Mr. Smith's retirement party in 1990. I recall that Mr. Smith was pleased with my career choice. I often think of Mr. Smith. He was the best and most inspiring teacher of my entire academic life, which of course included college and law school. Not one of my professors throughout college and law school even approached his level of fine teaching and inspiration. I realize that I am rather late with this tribute. I sincerely hope a family member sees it. I am comforted by the thought that Mr. Smith will see it from his Heavenly Resting Place. Love always to my great teacher. Ralph F. DiSomma

I just recently learned of Bob's passing. We worked together for a period of time at the Central Office of the NYC Board of Education. I will always remember his great sense of humor, wit, and to this day our lunch conversations on a wide variety to topics.. It was an honor to have known him. My condolences to his family, belated as they are.
