I met Mrs. Sharkey in 1966 when her son Larry and I were in High School together. Since I lived on the next block, I was over his house often. I loved going to the Sharkey house. It was a great house, full of fun and music.
The thing I remember most was all the singing. The Sharkey’s were a very musical family, sort of like an Irish version of the Von Trapp Family only bigger, MUCH bigger. At family gatherings, everyone had to sing something, including visitors. Oddly enough, I don’t remember Mrs. Sharkey singing, but she was the center of it all, the matriarch keeping court as people performed for her. I remember Mr. Sharkey singing “Portrait of My Love” to her.
The Sharkey’s weren’t just the biggest family I knew. They were one of the happiest. And most of the credit goes to Mrs. Sharkey who raised and loved twelve children. There is a poem by Katherine Tynan about Irish mothers that describes a woman like Bernadette McDermott Sharkey very well
I am the pillars of the house;
The keystone of the arch am I.
Take me away, and roof and wall
Would fall to ruin me utterly.
I am the fire upon the hearth,
I am the light of the good sun,
I am the heat that warms the earth,
Which else were colder than a stone.
At me the children warm their hands;
I am their light of love alive.
Without me cold the hearthstone stands,
Nor could the precious children thrive.
AD
I am the twist that holds together
The children in its sacred ring,
Their knot of love, from whose close tether
No lost child goes a-wandering.

(Mrs.) Bernadette (McDermott) Sharkey – A Tribute
There’s a new angel looking down on us. I first met Mrs. Sharkey in 1954, the year that Margaret Mary and I entered kindergarten, and we became fast friends. It did not take long to be swept up into the Sharkey family—there were only five children at the time.
In my child’s mind, I came to think that I was an honorary member of that family, although my status kept getting displaced as another brother or sister came along. Seven decades later, I often reflect on how blessed I was for all the hours I spent in that house on Terrace Boulevard in New Hyde Park. It was filled with love and laughter with a hint of mischief thrown in—by the Matriarch.
I have very distinct memories of Halloweens—her creativity with costumes and parties which were always interlaced with her dry, mischievous humor. Then there were times sitting around the kitchen mixing batter for cakes where she’d watch us do the work while she entertained us with stories and jokes.
The lessons I absorbed just hanging out there—how to change diapers and other basics of child care; how you can accomplish more with honey than vinegar. She truly exemplified the phrase “loving kindness.”
We exchanged Christmas cards for many years and just a few years back I opened hers which she signed “Bernadette (Mrs. Sharkey).” I exclaimed, “That’s just wrong. I can never call her Bernadette.” It was not because her children and I were raised in a time where adults were never addressed by their first name, nor because we were both “seasoned women” in our own rights. It was because she deserved to be called by her honorific.
Mrs. Sharkey, you may have left this earth, but the ever-present glint that was always in your eyes will remain with us forever. Tonight, I’ll raise a glass of champagne and celebrate your life.
