Obituary of Marciana Velasco

Marciana “Mercy” (Gupit) Velasco was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and compassionate friend to many. After a T-cell lymphoma diagnosis earlier this year, she fought the disease as she lived her life, with courage, determination and grace. On 12/3/2023, she decided it was time she joined her late husband of almost 50 years, Ruben Velasco for the lunch date he’s been patiently waiting for her to attend. Reunited, Ruben will have his best friend and favorite dance partner back by his side.

While small in stature, Mercy made a big impression on the world around her. Born in Batangas, Philippines, the youngest of 5 children, she loved animals and pursued a nursing career to help others. As a nurse, she provided comfort and care to hundreds, if not thousands of patients, was a favorite coworker and remembered for her compassion. She was the epitome of the saying, “good things come in small packages.”

Mercy was the proud mother of 2 sons, Jason (Florence née Cho) Velasco and Neil (Jill née Winsper) Velasco whom she loved with all her heart along with their spouses. Her beloved grandson, Joseph Velasco was a great source of joy and amazement. She is survived by her sister Gaudencia (Mamou) Perez, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins, Mercy will be remembered by her many family members and friends as having a kind heart, warm smile and a great love for all of God’s creatures, big and small.

Mercy loved spending time with her family and dancing. Together with Ruben she was a proud member of the Knights / Ladies of Rizal, and also the God the Father prayer group. She was a force and a support to her family and loved ones. Mercy will be greatly missed, but will live on in memories and in the hearts of people she came across in a life well-lived.

Mercy would appreciate donations to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center to further their mission of helping to treat and support cancer patients and their families.  www.mskcc.org
