It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts the family of Italina Costa shares that she passed away peacefully on Friday, September 1, 2023.

Italina was born December 19, 1917, in the small town of Compiano, Italy. Italina was always a woman of great faith and strength. At almost 106 years old she witnessed things in her life that most people would think are unimaginable. During her lifetime, she survived two worldwide pandemics, the Spanish Flu and more recently COVID. She lived through the invasion and occupation of her home by the enemy during World War II and witnessed many other historical events and technological advances that spanned her lifetime. She possessed a unique ability to constantly adapt and continue to move forward grounded in her strong faith in God.

In 1945 she married her loving husband Emilio, and they lived a beautiful life together of over 56 years of marriage until his passing in 2001. In 1958, at the age of 40, she came to America with hopes, as many immigrants had, to give her family a better life. She made the long trip by boat with her two young children, Margherita and Fernando to join her husband who had come 4 years earlier in order to find a job and a home for the family first. She had a tremendous work ethic and worked for over 26 years in New York City cleaning residential homes during the morning and office buildings in the evening. Before leaving for her evening shift, she always prepared a delicious dinner for the family to have when they got home.

Italina loved her family more than anything. They were the world to her as she was to them. She loved spending holidays and birthdays together with the whole family, looking at photo albums from the past, and calling her nieces, nephews and friends from both near and far to chat. She enjoyed tending to her garden, crocheting blankets, and making delicious Italian specialties from her hometown. She would have a small glass of wine with her dinner and had to end each meal with biscotti or something sweet. Italina prayed the rosary daily, sometimes multiple times a day asking for God to protect her, her family and friends. She was a devout and faithful follower of Saint Anthony and an active member of the San Antonio di Padova Society.

Italina will always be remembered for her devotion to her family, her beautiful smile, and her kind heart. She is survived by her two devoted children, Margherita Brattesani (Armando) and Fernando Costa (Florence), her two adoring grandchildren, Laura Sciametta (Tom) and Stephanie Herrera (Angel) and her three loving great grandchildren Daniella and Antonio Sciametta and Milo Herrera.

Italina will forever be missed, but we are comforted in knowing she is now reunited with her loving husband, her parents, her siblings and all her relatives and friends that have gone before her. It was a true blessing to have had her in our lives all these years and we will always remember what she taught us about dedication to family and devotion to God. She is now our Angel in Heaven watching over us.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks you to consider making a donation in Italina’s honor to Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Italina always had a special place in her heart for children and always contributed to this organization.

May her soul rest in peace and her memory be eternal.
