Obituary of Thomas Delaporte

Please share a memory of Thomas to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the untimely and sudden passing of Thomas Delaporte of East Williston, NY on Sunday June 4th 2023 at the age of 72.

Survived by his beloved wife of more than 47 years Gail Morris Delaporte, sons Michael (Jessica Wilson) and Stephen, grandson Odin; siblings, Joan Austin (Richard), Maureen Miller (Frank), brother Edward Delaporte (Sophia) sister-in-law Lynn Morris Parks (Peter), Jill Morris DeBonis (Anthony). He was a loving Uncle to 11 nieces and nephews and 20 great nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his mother Elizabeth and his father Edward.

Thomas studied engineering physics at Farmingdale State University and was an Air Force Veteran. He was an ex-chief, Fire Commissioner and Treasurer of the East Williston Fire Department; a Nassau County Fire Commissioner, Financial Secretary of the North Shore Holy Name Society, past Chairman of the Eighth Battalion, past President of the East Williston Exempt Benevolent Association and also a member of the North Shore Fire Council.  He owned his own business for 23 years and subsequently joined the Steamfitters Union until he retired in 2016.

As a family man, he spent time coaching little league and soccer and enjoyed spending his time entertaining for loved ones and friends. Tom especially enjoyed being a grandfather to his beloved grandson Odin. They shared a special connection with each other and a mutual joy and love in each other’s hearts. Thomas was a nature-lover and enjoyed gardening having sowed the earth to his last breath.

He loved his family, friends and community and enjoyed helping others whenever he could. Ex-Chief Delaporte will be remembered in the fire service 8th Battalion and East Williston Fire Department as a renowned cook who enjoyed hosting sumptuous meals for his fellow firefighters.  A skilled craftsman, he was extremely handy at fixing just about anything.  He was a selfless individual who always found the time to help others in need and enjoyed sharing his skills.

A pillar and mentor of the community, Tom will be profoundly missed by family, friends and loved ones, including all who knew him.

“As we enjoy great advantages from the inventions of others, we should be glad of an opportunity to serve others by any invention of ours, and this we should do freely and generously.”
