Obituary of John C. Hughes

Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of John C. Hughes of Williston Park, NY on June 3, 2023.

John is survived by his beloved wife Diane Hughes, son Patrick Joseph, and siblings Patrick Hughes (Jo Ann), Eleanor Minks (Edward), and Amy Hughes (John). He was a loving uncle to Ryan, Elizabeth, Claire, and Nora.

John was born on April 21, 1958 in Manhattan, NY to Patrick & Eleanor Hughes (née Plunkett). John grew up in Bethpage & Old Bethpage before the family moved to Rockaway Beach in late 1970’s.  John attended St. Martin of Tours elementary school in Bethpage, St. Pius X  School in Plainview and graduated Holy Family Diocesan High School in South Huntington in 1976. John entered the International Brotherhood of the Electrical Union’s Electrical Apprentice Program at age 19,  received his Associate's degree from SUNY Empire State University and became a Journeyman for IBEW’s Local 3.   John loved being an electrician, he took great pride in his work on numerous NYC buildings.

John was recently retired from IBEW’s Local Union 3 where he worked for 44 years. He spent the last 12 years of his career as a Show Electrician at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in Manhattan.

In addition to his excellent memory in recalling facts, dates, and names, John will be remembered for his lightning quick wit and sense of humor. Rarely did he tell a story that didn’t result in laughter from all listening. He will be missed by family and friends for his infectious humor and for the wonderful guy that he was!

John was predeceased by his parents (Patrick & Eleanor) and stepfather Arthur C. Schupbach.

In lieu of sending flowers, please consider making a donation to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Research in John’s name.
