Obituary of Zulma I. Marchand

Zulma Iris (Zue) Marchand, 80, of Mineola, NY passed away on May 26, 2023 in NYU Long Island Hospital. A visitation with the family will be held at the Weigand Brothers Funeral Home in Williston Park, NY, on May 31st between 4 - 8pm. 

Zue was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico on July 14, 1942. She moved to New York City with her family when she was 5 years old.  She married at age 18 and raised her family.  In her 40’s she decided to go back to college.  She went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from St. John’s University and her Master’s Degree in bilingual special education from Adelphi University.  She worked for the New York City Board of Education as a teacher for 20 years. She taught in Corona and East Elmhurst, Queens, where she used her Spanish fluency and no-nonsense teaching approach to touch the lives of hundreds of students.  She enjoyed seeing Broadway musicals, going to museums, collecting teapots, drinking the best of British teas, and shopping at IKEA; but her most favorite pastime was being with her family.

Zue is survived by her daughter, Leslie Marchand of Kew Gardens, son Steven Marchand & his wife Elizabeth of Jericho, grandchildren Lauren & Christopher Marchand and grandpuppy Ozzy.  She is preceded in death by her husband, John G. Marchand.
