I’m stunned and saddened at the news related to me by fellow band mate Richard “Farmer” Cafaro, of the passing of Harold “Mac” Mckernan. Mac was a great friend and had a tremendous influence on my musical education. He was 9 years my senior and we met at the Night Owl pub in New Hyde Park, where I would stop in to watch him sit in with Hank and Billy. When he and Farmer told me they were going on the road, I asked if I could join them, and much to my delight, I became their bass player with Danny and The Juniors and then the Shirelles. Mac took me under his wing and became my musical mentor and in our travels became like an older brother. He was always there to give me valuable advice and to share some nuggets of wisdom. In the years since then I would stop in to see him perform his one man show at various venues, but I’m sad to say in the last few years I didn’t get to see him as often as I would have liked to. My wife and I were just talking about him last week and I wish I had taken the opportunity to call him. Time slips away but the memories live on.
Our condolences and prayers to Mac’s family
We will miss him greatly.

A friend, a mentor, and a person of strong faith.
He will be remembered, and his advice missed.

So saddened to hear of your passing. It’s been a long time since we last performed together, but they will always be a highlight of my musical career. From the local clubs to the bigger venues with the Shirelles, and many other golden oldies, your performance was always top notch soul, inspiring those who worked with you to step it up a notch, and I know today I am better for it, for this I thank you my friend.

Thank you for being my good friend. Some of the best times of our lives we spent together making some great music. You were one of the best keyboard players I have ever known & we've known each other since we were teenagers. From the St Aidan's confraternity dances to the Electric Lady Studio sessions & on to the Central
Park concert. I am so sorry you are gone. I called you very recently. You always call me back. Now I know why you didn't. Thank you for being my good friend.
