Obituary of Joseph J. Powell (Joe) Joseph J. Powell (Joe) of New York and North Carolina passed away unexpectedly on June 25th at the age of 78. Joseph was born in Greenwich Village, New York in 1941 to Helen and Joseph Powell.He grew up in Parkchester, Bronx, N.Y. He attended Xavier High School and graduated from Manhattan Prep. Joe then went on to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill which began his love for Chapel Hill and North Carolina. After UNC-Chapel Hill, Joe trained and became a proud United States Marine and served in the US Marine Reserves. Joseph joined the brotherhood of the NYPD in 1965, where he served for 35 years and retired as a Lieutenant. He was proud of his years serving the city and citizens of New York. Joe loved being at the beaches in the Hamptons, NC and Florida with family & friends. He was an avid runner for many years and ran in The New York City Marathon. His love of fishing, teaching his grandchildren, nephews and great-nephews how to fish, traveling to the mountains and just being out in nature with family & friends were the things in life that made him happy. Joseph was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Helen Powell & his Nephew and Godson Ryan Powell. He is survived by his former wife Jeannette Powell Brewer, their daughter Deborah Powell Hill(Kelly) and their grandchildren Bryan Hill and Caroline Hill, all of North Carolina. Christina Monte, whom he considered his daughter of New Rochelle, NY. Sister, Helen Powell of Bridgehampton, NY. Brothers, Thomas Powell(Diane) of Roslyn, NY & Dennis Powell(Mary Ann) of Columbia, South Carolina. Niece, Kristen Powell Prince(Mike) of Port Washington, NY. Nephews, Dennis Powell, Matthew Powell of Columbia, SC and Great Nephews, Charlie, Liam & Declan Prince and James Powell as well as many special cousins and friends in NY and NC. The family will hold a visitation on Thursday, July 2nd from 2-5pm and 6-8pm with a short service at 8pm at Weigand Brothers Funeral Home located at 49 Hillside Avenue, New York 11596.
