We will meet again, and cross blades as comrades in Valhalla my Brother.
You have gone from us too soon, and all who knew you shall feel diminished by your passing.

Eric was a the kind of person my late husband Brian would call a “stand up guy.” High praise indeed. I also remember his poetic side from an SCA event I attended out on Long Island. He was a good man, and talented. My condolences to Eileen and the family, blood and chosen.

Eric is the kind of soul that gave others little room to aggrandize his person- he was the real thing; a precious reminder to what people may strive to be. He achieved a profound understanding of strength and decency and had no talent at all at self-deception. He was ever generous with his best effort, and always uplifted those around him.
He is the reason I took up fencing (now a huge part of my life) and let me know it was alright to be a veteran when my school made it very hard. I wish I had had the chance to share my love of dungeons and dragons with the man. There must've been thousands of easier paths to take, but he chose to be the man we knew, and enriched all who knew him for it. With love and grace, farewell my friend.

Eric was one of the first people I met in the medieval hobby group we both belonged to. He attempted to teach me some swordwork, but I;'m two left feet and not enough of anything else. He still impressed me with his dedication to the sport.
I am saddened that the world has lost such a chivalrous and wonderful man. May we all remember his legacy and cherish it.

Eric was a true inspiration in fencing and chivalry. His skill with the blade made quite a few of us in the historical reenactor groups strive to better ourselves. And Eric's outgoing personality made it fun to do so. With a wit was as sharp as his skill with the rapier, made fencing Eric a joy.
I for one was lucky enough to cross paths and blades with Eric and walk off the field with a friend.

Eric wore the "green and white" Ostgardr Provincial Fencing Champion tabard twice... there were snarky jokes about it "being too much like work" because he would have to stand as part of the Provincial retinue in court at events, but he clearly enjoyed both the honor and the sartorial splendor.

I met Eric at Fordham University while he was playing with the MSR as Etienne de Montfort. He was 25 and I was 19. This is the man I fell head over heels in love with, and after we were parted I spent the next 20 years looking for someone exactly like him. Eventually I did find that person - and it was him, accept no substitute. I waited another 7 years to be his wife. He is worth waiting for. We are both veterans and I view this new separation as just a deployment. I will see my beloved again.

Eric and I were married on 5 May 2002 in Morgan Park, Glen Cove NY. It was a Heathen / Asatru ceremony lovingly crafted by Hel's Gydhia Krei Steinberg and presided over by Odin's Gydhia Galina Krasskova. Svipdagsmal was central to the ceremony, and we had invocations of Odin, Freyr and Tyr that were accompanied by the Joni Mitchell song "Shadows & Light".

Eric enjoyed doing live steel demos with Historic Arms, a performance group for many years at the Cloisters Renaissance Faire. His Liao Dynasty persona, Yeh-Liu Targai, reflected his interest in Asian culture sparked by his primary style of Lama Pai Kung Fu, Yang style Tai Chi, and the many other martial arts that he studied and practiced. His armor is based on the famous Terra Cotta warrior statues, but there's a funny story - it's made out of "curb your dog" signs that NYC was throwing away!

Eric in Queens, NY at age 12, off to Rohdes ' fencing salle in Manhattan. He began taking kenpo karate lessons at the age of 10 and fencing at age 11. He would later joke that after instruction under a Prussian fencing master and an Okinawan sensei, dealing with the USMC drill instructors at Parris Island was a piece of cake.

In the spring of 1975, at the age of 17 and with full permission of his (Army) father and (WAVES/Navy) mother, Eric VOLUNTARILY enlisted in the US Marine Corps. The Vietnam War ended that April while he was still in Basic Training. Young & unskilled, the Corps made him a cook. It came to light that he could do math in his head like lightning, calculating timing & supplies to feed 1000 men with a staff of three. He graduated 3rd in his class and had his pick of duty station. He chose Okinawa.
