PETER LEE posted a condolence

I lived next door to the Cooneys, growing up, and was one of Peter’s basketball buddies for several years. In fact, I spent as much time as possible in the Cooney’s driveway where there was a basketball hoop, and I was welcomed by his family as a hanger-on to Peter’s basketball games. It seemed easy to enjoy life in those days when childhood seemed never to end, and boredom was easily transformed into epic, heroic battles on the 1/8 size basket ball court. Peter was quite a good shooter, not a great dribbler, and he did not have that tendency to brag & cheat, which was a common affliction among our friends at that age. He knew how to have fun, he was fair, he was a dependable friend. And he was wicked funny. I regret not having reconnected with Peter in the past few years, when I began to slow down from a frenetic life style, working/living in England and then Boston, raising kids, and now figuring out “retirement”. Peter - you were a good friend and excellent b-ball competitor, and I do miss you.

Peter Cooney was a loving brother, 15 months younger than me. I have lots of great memories of us growing up together. Since I moved to Florida 20 years ago, he called me at least once a week to say hello and see how I was doing. We always laughed and joked around. Those calls, and Peter, meant the world to me, he was always so thoughtful. I will miss my wonderful younger brother forever.

One of my favorite things about my Uncle Peter was being able to count on him for any adventure. Whether it was swimming with dolphins in the Caribbean, seeing Christina Aguilera and Justin Timberlake in concert, playing games at family Christmas parties, or watching the Jets or whatever team was on, Peter was always present, enthusiastic, and had something funny to say during every family activity and gathering. I will always admire his spirit, work ethic, ability to love deeply and how he handled anything thrown his way. He was struck by lightning... twice! Two separate times! I think that attests to how strong, special, and unique he was. Reading all the kind words and fond memories shared in his honor has further affirmed his selfless nature and how loved he was by those around him. It’s hard to process that I won’t be seeing his big smile at our next Cooney Family Party. I love and miss him so much.

I can’t tell you how sad I am that one of my heroes is gone. I wish I could have spent more time with him, he was just an amazing guy. What a wonderful man. He had this wonderful smile. Peter brought so much joy and happiness to everyone. He was an awesome uncle and an amazing man. He was a warm, friendly guy and a guy who I always loved to see and whenever I ran into him I was always happy. I’m going to miss him a lot. I’m proud to say that he’s my uncle and that I knew him.

My older brother Peter was the best older brother someone could have. He was always there for me. There never was a bad word spoken about him. Peter always put everyone else first. Everyone I know loved him. He will be greatly missed.

So many wonderful and true things are and will be said by Peter's family, his friends and the people who worked with him. Peter seems to have been the same beautiful human wherever he went. I will share that to me as his cousin, Peter seemed to be the kindest member of an extremely kind family.
Here's just one example --- a few years back, I was invited to join the Cooney brothers and sisters and their families for their annual pre-Christmas celebration. Peter picked me up from Brooklyn, brought me out to Long Island one year and New Jersey the other and back again. Peter, in case I didn't thank you enough for making those Christmases especially bright, while typically acting like it was no big deal I thank you now. I am and I will be missing you. Rest in peace dear cousin Peter.

Having Peter as my brother has been a blessing from day one. I was born the day after his 9th birthday and he always would joke that I was his present, that’s how sweet he was. Every year we would share our birthdays and catch each other up on our lives. He was always the sweetest, kindest, big hearted person....I am going to miss him more than I can put into words....he is leaving a huge hole in my heart. My other siblings are rallying around....so grateful to come from such a large loving family.
