It’s hard to put into words the tremendous impact my grandpa had on not only my life, but the lives of everyone who knew him. To put it simply, he was the best.
If you knew him, you’d describe Bill Richards as kind, passionate, and genuine. If you knew him well, you’d also describe him as stubborn, smart, and most of all generous. Even when he hadn’t been home in about two months, he said to me, “I’ve got a book to give ya! Go into my kitchen, on the side table— it’s yours.” I’ve never met someone who was so willing to help someone out or inspire others.
Growing up, my brother and I spent our weekends at Grandpa’s house. There was never a dull moment with Grandpa; he always had an art project for us to do, a movie to watch, or a game to play. He taught me how to draw and paint and encouraged me to try new things. He hung out with me while I was bored at my brother’s little league games, despite the fact that he had a love for coaching that lasted over 20 years.
In recent years, my grandpa and I would catch up whenever I was home from school. He was interested in what I was creating and would tell me he was proud, even if all we talked about was my job at Chipotle. Needless to say, I always left Grandpa’s with a smile. I saw him almost everyday this summer. Our daily routine consisted of me coming over with a Vanilla Chai Latte, which he would sip while we talked about anything and everything. I think I’ll most those days the most.
I believe that we can have many soulmates in our lives— those who understand you and push you to be your best (even if you are only rolling burritos), make you laugh and instill their wisdom through stories and experiences. I lost a soulmate last weekend, but I will carry my memories of him with me always. Luv ya, Grandpa.
