Obituary of Dorothy A. Gill

Please share a memory of Dorothy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Dorothy A. Gill of parents, Walter and Sarah Sheerin, was born and bred in Brooklyn, New York on July 3, 1933. She had one sibling, a younger brother, Walter T. Sheerin.

Her household, well-steeped in Catholicism, led her to St. Gregory’s grade school and then the all-female Catherine McCauley High School.

She got a job with the New York Telephone Company and worked up to executive secretary to the Vice President of Finance in the New York Executive Office.  She was well respected and held onto that position for 48 years.

Her serious love life started in a bowling ally where she first met her soon to be husband.  They met, fell for each other, had an exciting courtship and ended up as husband and wife.  She was 23 at the time.  Unfortunately her husband John McDermott passed away 9 years later due to cancer.  They lived in Brooklyn at the time.  Five years later, she met through a mutual friend, Michael Gill whom she married.  They built a home in Holmdel, New Jersey.  They lived a happy and wonderful life there for 42 years.

During her married years, Dorothy attended movies, Broadway shows, dances, etc.  Interestingly enough, she became a football enthusiast since both husbands had been avid fans.

Dorothy’s brother had 4 children – 3 girls and a boy and Michael’s family was comparatively large so she was in the midst of a rather large family which was very close and spent many holidays together.

After Michael’s passing Dorothy sold the house in New Jersey and moved back to Long Island to be by her brother and family.

Interviewed and written by Arthur Schwartz, (resident) in the Sunrise Assisted Living and published in their monthly newsletter called “The Happenings” October, 2017.
