Obituary of Salvatore J. DeCanio

Please share a memory of Salvatore to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Salvatore J. DeCanio, 87, passed away peacefully May 3, 2019 at Greenfield Senior Living, Winchester, VA where he was receiving hospice care. He was preceded in death by his wife, Augustine (Gussie). Sal was born in 1931 and witnessed many things in a long life: the Great Depression, WWII, the Cold War, and lately the IT age. Sal is survived by his son, Stephen DeCanio and wife Lana Loy of Houston, TX, son, Christopher DeCanio and wife Janet of Winchester, VA, grandchildren Geoffrey DeCanio of Austin, TX, Hope of Winchester, VA and Dominick of Winchester, VA. His grandson Thomas pre-deceased him. Sal was a lifelong resident of New York, mostly in Williston Park. He served in the army during the Korean War, later receiving an associate degree in chemistry from Hunter College in NYC. In later years, while working, Sal earned his B.A. degree from Adelphi University. Sal worked as a court officer and later court clerk for New York State Supreme Court. He was a very hard-working husband and father – always holding multiple jobs. He still found time to enjoy cigars, Italian food, wine, and massive breakfasts. He also enjoyed watching and reading science fiction. Like many folks from his era, he read a variety of popular technology magazines and could build and fix almost anything. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 AM Saturday, May 18, 2019 at St. Aidans RC Church. Burial in Holy Rood cemetery. We would like to express our thanks for the wonderful help and care given at Greenfield Senior Living which provided one of Sal’s last enjoyments when they took him and other residents to a jazz concert at Shenandoah University. And thank you also to Home Instead Senior Care for their services during the several months when Chris and Janet cared for Dad in their home.
