Sherwood was a good man. Above all, he provided for his family. His eyes were fixed on this goal. It was paramount in his mind. Decisions were based on it: moving from Pittsburgh; teaching High School in 1960’s Levittown NY, and being an adjunct Professor of English at community college until well into his late eighties.
His early childhood experiences of a Mother’s deep love, but real hardship set his mind on security for himself and his family. Sherwood accomplished his goal and then some. He was a loving husband and attentive Father.
I’ve known him for over fifty years. Working with him in the English Dept of Levittown Memorial. Where Sherwood was a highly respected teacher. No nicknames, no rumors, no fooling around with Mr. Lucke. He was a no nonsense man. But that was a two way street. Everyone felt his respect and regard for them as individuals. He had high standards for his students. He demanded they perform. He insisted that they climb the educational ladder. But he was always there to help them, and show them how to move all the way to the top
Flannery O’Conner told us “A good man is hard to find” Well we all found one in Sherwood Lucke.
I will miss him. He was a good friend.
