Monsignor James McDonald was the most charismatic and inspirational priest that I have ever known. He was the spiritual leader of the parishioners of St. Aidan's church and would frequently say that his mission was to get people to heaven. He was instrumental in offering many hours of confession while the pastor of St. Aidan's church. Monsignor touched the lives of countless people on long island during his priesthood. I know with certainty that he now resides in the Kingdom of Heaven with our savior Jesus Christ.

He was the associate pastor at St Mattew’s In Dix Hills when I was a parishioner there with my family. I more holy man you will never find in this world again. He lived the life that God laid out for him. He inspired parishioners to try to be more like Jesus and Mary. He is beloved by all who ever heard his voice or talked to him. I also grew up on Brompton Road in Garden City, just as Monsignor had. Though I was younger than he, and he was already pursuing his vocation, I got to speak with him many times when he would visit his parents, James and Dorothy. He always spoke calmly and was so kind to me. I was great friends with his parents as well, a lovely family that I will always keep in my heart.
God bless you in Heaven, dear Monsignor Jim

My father served Mass with Father at St Matthews. His passion and love for God was ever present. I was 10 yrs old and Father would come off the alter and walk down the isles preaching. Something that was never done in the 60s. When I grew up and moved to Moriches to my excitement he was the paster at my church. I will always remember him also watched him say the rosary on TV. My memories of Msgr. McDonald are a few: he was always available for confession, even to sitting in the confessional for hours on end so that all could receive absolution. Msgr. reassured us that he had heard every sin imaginable, and would even give just 1 Hail Mary as Penance. Msgr. always called upon my grandson at the children's Mass, and never let a time pass to say he had hopes that Dominic would eventually join the priesthood. Msgr.'s sense of humor was delightful and more importantly, his faith overflowed to us whenever we were in his presence. Msgr. McDonald - you will be missed, I will miss you very much. Rest In Peace. Now you will personally see the face of Our Blessed Mother, whom you adored.

We will always remember Monsignor McDonald as our Good Shepherd in St. Aidan's. Being Parishioners of St. Aidan's Church for nearly 15 yrs., he's one energetic, engaging and supportive priest we ever met. He truly cared for our religious life by offering different mass schedules, therefore we would see to it that we can attend mass during Holy Days of Obligations, and of course, confessions!

Dear McDonald Family,
As a lector and catechist at the Church of St. Aidan over the course of the past 9 years, I had the great privilege of working alongside Monsignor McDonald, and the pleasure of getting to know him as a person. Though our many chats, he was always friendly and kind, always interested in my family and professional life. In addition, he never forgot an act of kindness or expression of care and concern.
As you know, he was a great priest, so in love with God and eager to bring the love of God to others. Of all the priests I have known in my lifetime (including over 22 years of Catholic education and many more years of service to the Church) I felt closest to him.
Please know that your loss is shared by my family and me, and all of those who have come to know and love Monsignor throughout his long, enthusiastic, and energetic ministry. Be assured of our love and continued prayers for him and for all of you.
With prayers and condolences,
Dr. Joe Cervia and Family

My heaettfelt sympathy to Msgr. McDonald’s family. I met him when I was 12 years old at a religious education lesson. Later, he married my husband and me at St Matthews RC Church. Many years later, he came to my parent’s house in Stony Brook, and renewed their 60th wedding anniversary vows. He held a special place in my heart. His sermons were moving and inspirational. I am now 65 years old and married 46 years. I was hoping he could renew our 50th wedding anniversary vows. RIP Msgr. McDonald.

My sister is a member of the Sisters of Mercy of Alma, Michigan. When she would come home for a visit and Msgr. McDonald would see her at Mass, he would chat with her about vocations - how to recruit, how to sustain them. He was always amazed that so many vibrant young women would join her order year after year. He wanted to know their recruiting secret!! Lol. His heartfelt desire was for men to join the priesthood and share the fulfilling lifelong experience that he had. In his memory, we can all pray for an increase in vocations, especially on Long Island. Thank you, Msgr. McDonald for all you did for the people at St. Matthew's. You reached, influenced and helped many within the parish and we will miss you so very, very much. Rest in peace and enjoy your well-deserved eternal reward.
