Dave Metz was both a friend and a mentor. He took me under his veteran wing ten years ago in the Sigma Pro program and helped me grow over the last decade as a photographer, as a writer, as a businessman, and as a father.
Dave was a great coach, a keen observer, and an excellent communicator. His vast experience in the photography world and beyond meant that, when Dave said something, it was thoughtful and came from his heart. His offered praise carried much weight.
It was Dave who suggested that I photograph animals against white backgrounds, Dave who first applied the term "critters" affectionately to my work. With that, my Curious Critters work began. To this end, I would not be where I am today without his keen and creative mind, his indomitable spirit, and his always true friendship.
With great respect and admiration, I offer condolences to Dave's family, to all who knew Dave in one way or another, and to the many photographers whose careers and lives were influenced by his illustrious career.
Dave Metz, my friend, I will miss you greatly.

A memorial contribution will be made to Cameras For Kids Foundation in Dave's name to extend the his legacy of focusing on art and education.
