Obituary of John D. Moro

John Moro, Sr., son of the late Concenzio and Lauretta Moro, passed away on July 23, 2018 at St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn, New York.  He was 82 years old.  He is predeceased by his son, John Moro, Jr., and is survived by his beloved wife, Janet Moro (née Daken), their children, Stephen, Matthew, and Jeanne, daughters-in-law, Donna, Lynn-Ann, and Antoinette, son-in-law, Pat, and grandchildren, Christopher, Zachary, Matthew, Kristin, Nicholas, Julia, Brendan, Alexa, Caroline, and Dean.  “Coach”, as his grandchildren knew him, will forever be remembered for his comforting sense of humor, his unwavering support of his family, his love/hate relationship with the New York Mets, and his unfailing ability to charm his grandchildren to laughter with a joke or a magic trick.

Born in Astoria, Queens on December 15, 1935, John Moro married Janet Daken in 1956.  At the time of his death, John and Janet were married for 62 years.  Together, John and Janet raised their four children on Locust Avenue in Port Washington, New York, where the family lived for many years.  Later in life, John and Janet moved to Roslyn, New York where John lived until his passing.  John and Janet’s homes in Port Washington and Roslyn, and the fishing pier behind their Florida condo, were the location for countless fond memories for John’s children, their spouses, and his grandchildren. 

John Moro spent the entirety of his 36-year career in proud public service to the City of New York, first with the NYPD (3 years) and then with the FDNY (33 years).  In 1993, John retired from the FDNY having achieved the rank of Deputy Chief.  In his long career serving and protecting others, he was a hero to many, but to none more so than his family, who, despite their loss, feel blessed to have observed his example of selflessness, responsibility, and devotion to his family. 

Family will receive friends to celebrate John's life at Weigand Bros Funeral Home 49 Hillside Ave., Williston Park, NY, Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Funeral Mass Thursday 11:15 am St Aidan’s Church. Interment Holy Rood Cemetery
