Obituary of Francis J Cashin Jr

Francis J. Cashin - Prominent Long Island Engineer
Francis J. Cashin, 88, a resident of "Fleet Landing" in Atlantic Beach, FL; and a long-time resident of East Williston and North Hills, NY, passed away on May 22, 2013.
Born June 3, 1924 in Brooklyn, NY to Frank J. and Mary Regina (Genoese) Cashin, Mr. Cashin was educated at Xavier High School in New York City; and at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ, where he was awarded an honorary Doctorate in 1990. He also served as a member of the Stevens Institute Board of Trustees and as president of the Alumni Association.
Mr. Cashin is the founder of Cashin Associates, P.C., a Long Island-based Professional Engineering firm. He was a registered Professional Engineer in 28 states and 21 countries, including Ireland where he held dual citizenship. He also founded the Long Island Sanitation Officials' Association in 1968; which awards four scholarships annually in his name to worthy students studying Environmental Sciences.
Mr. Cashin was very active in a number of other organizations, including the New York State Society of Professional Engineers, for which he was president from 1982 to 1983; and the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, where he was President from 1988 to 1989. He served as a Lector at St. Aidan Church in Williston Park and as a member of the Planning Committee for the development of the Diocese of Rockville Center High Schools. He was also a firefighter in the East Williston Fire Department, president of the East Williston Little League, and a founding member and president of the Long Island Athletic Club.
Mr. Cashin's military career included World War II where he served on the USS Eugene A. Greene, a Navy Destroyer; and then in Korea on the Destroyer USS George K. MacKenzie where he served as Chief Engineer. Following his active duty, Mr. Cashin served for many years in the U.S. Naval Reserve, retiring as a Lieutenant Commander, and was a member of the VFW and American Legion.
Mr. Cashin was married to Katherine "K" Cullen (deceased). He is survived by his wife Jean, a sister Mary Elizabeth Saitta of Port Orange, FL and eight children: Francis III of Garden City, NY; Katherine Hegner of South Dennis, MA; James of East Setauket, NY; Mary Regina Priolo of Williston Park, NY; Michael of Glen Head, NY; Aidan of Garden City, NY; Christopher of Albertson, NY, and Thaddeus of Albertson, NY and step daughters Diane Ogust Moran of Woodstock, NY and Madeline Ogust of NY, NY. Mr. Cashin also leaves 18 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Memorial visitation will be Wednesday, May 29th from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Weigand's Funeral Home, 49 Hillside Avenue, Williston Park, NY 516-746-4484.
A memorial Mass is scheduled for Thursday, May 30th at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's RC Church in Roslyn, NY. Private burial will be at a future date.
