SMITH – Edward S. Smith, passed away peacefully Sunday, September 6th, 2015. He was the loving husband of Evelyne Smith for 67 years. Born June 30, 1923 in Garden City, NY; the son of the late Edward and Florence Smith. Edward was formerly of Mineola, Long Island until he retired to Highland Lake in Winsted. He was a successful business man founding Smith & DeGroat Real Estate in 1944, which is still in operation today. He was a devoted public servant representing the Village of Mineola as Mayor. He is the name sake for the Edward Smith Mineola Lions Club. Above all else, he had a great love for his family. He leaves three sons, Edward (Cindi), Mark (Dawn) & Matthew (Joanne); grandchildren Samantha, Patrick, Peder, Sean, Edward, David, Michael, Jarrod, Calvin; and great grandchildren, Mason, Alex and Desiree. Friends may call on Thursday, September 10th at Weigand Funeral Home from 2-4 and 7-9. A Roman Catholic Mass will be held on Friday, September 11th at the Church of Saint Aidan's, 505 Willis Avenue, Williston Park, New York at 10am. Burial will follow at Cemetery of Holy Rood, Westbury, New York. Reception will be held at Wheatley Hills Golf Club, 147 East Williston Avenue, East Williston, New York following the burial at approximately 1 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Edward S. Smith Mineola Lions Club Blind Fund would be greatly appreciated and can be sent to 27 E. Jericho Tpke, Mineola, NY 11501.
