Obituary of James P. Smith

James P. "Jimmy" Smith, of Albertson, NY, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2023 at age 87. Jimmy is survived by his beloved wife, Ann, his daughter Catherine, his son James and daughter-in-law Emily, as well as his granddaughter, Annie. Jimmy was predeceased by his daughter Sarah. Proudly born and bred in Ireland, Jimmy later emigrated to America, where he married the love of his life, Ann, on May 12, 1962. This year marked their sixty-first year of marriage.

Jimmy worked at various jobs including dispatcher at Pan Am and maitre d' at Terrace on the Park, before beginning a three-decade career with the State of New York as a review analyst for The Workers Compensation Board. Jimmy took early retirement so he could devote as many days as possible to the second great love of his life, fishing. Whether heading out on a party boat, surfcasting on a beach or dropping a line off a pier, Jimmy always found his greatest peacefulness on the water. He was a rabid fan of both the Jets and Mets, and has the wardrobe to prove it.

A lifelong Catholic, Jimmy devoted hundreds of hours of his life to serving his church as an usher, lector, and member of a prayer group, first at Incarnation Church in Queens Village, NY, and later at Saint Aidan's in Williston Park, NY.

Jimmy's greatest joy came from telling long stories, and sharing laughs around the dinner table with his family. A larger than life character, Jimmy made an impact on anyone who ever met him. He will never be forgotten.

Visitation will be from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM, Thursday at Weigand Brothers Funeral Home in Williston Park. A mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:15 AM, Friday at Saint Aidan's Church.
