Obituary of Philipp Strauss

Please share a memory of Philipp to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Philipp F. Strauss of East Williston, NY, passed away on June 27th, 2023 at 11 am, exactly the date and time of his wedding 64 years earlier to his beloved wife Carla.

Phil was born in Brooklyn, NY to Philipp and Elizabeth (Spies) Strauss on January 8, 1933. He went to Brooklyn Tech High School and then joined the Army, proudly serving for two years (1953-55).  Following his service, he graduated from NYU with a BS in Industrial Engineering and started his career in electrical contracting.  He spent over 30 years in leadership roles at a variety of companies in the industry.

Phil had a diverse set of talents and interests. A true engineer, Phil was able to build and/or fix nearly anything. He built a house at Putnam Lake, NY at the age of 17 which later became a summer home for his and his sister’s families.  They enjoyed many years of sailing and swimming at the lake along with badminton and board and card games. He also loved skiing and family ski vacations every winter.  Phil and his wife Carla have lived in the same home in East Williston for 50 years, and spent many weeks each year traveling to visit family and far-flung destinations around the world.

Phil is survived by his devoted wife Carla, his three children Christi, Philipp (and wife Terry), Jennifer (and husband  Martin), and three grandchildren – Kailey, Sofie and Philipp. He is also survived by his sister Carolyn Hetzel, a niece and two nephews.

In lieu of gifts or flowers, donations can be made in Phil’s honor to Wounded Warrior Project or a charity of your choice.
