I had the most wonderful fortune of growing next door to the McKeon family. My parents were close to Carol and Dick McKeon. I would say very close. I actually babysat for the kids who then became dear friends. We shared the summer holidays together, clam bakes and block parties. Our father’s hunted and fished together. Williston Park was the very best place to grow up. I remember Mr McKeon always with a big smile, he always made me feel safe and welcome in his home. And what a great laugh he had, very contagious. He and my father would occasionally have “a snort” and start telling stories. I can still hear them laughing together downstairs. I remember talking to him through the hedges, just “Hello Mr McKeon”, “Oh is that you Heather?” Just neighborly chit chat. When my sister and I moved away my parents moved back to Ireland. The McKeons were fortunate as most of their kids married and most stayed nearby. They were happy to stay close to their family because that was their priority, always and utmost. Could not ever, ever have asked for better neighbors. Mr McKeon’s passing has left a whole in my heart because he and Mrs McKeon are some of my favorite core memories of my childhood. I am sincerely sorry to all for the loss of your Dad. It was an honor to have known him and a pleasure to spend time with him, especially at family events . Dick was so much fun and could see the enjoyment he had with his children and grandchildren that was so special. He will be missed so very much. May your Dad rest in peace with the love of his life, Carol.

Growing up as a young boy “Uncle Dick” was always a special guy. He was a mentor and a hero to me . He followed my Dad, Ray Smith’s path into the New York City Fire Dept and into Rescue 4. That alone was quite an accomplishment. But he “IS” much more than that to me. He was kind , generous, always willing to help. He taught me a lot about life and how to treat people. He was a loving father and husband to Carol. If you asked me to name a couple that I thought was truly happy and loved each other , I would say Dick and Carol. He was more of an older brother than a cousin . I was lucky to know such a man and he will be terribly missed. He will never be forgotten.
