Mike Lane, a devoted husband, beloved father, and cherished grandfather, passed away on July 30, 2025 at the age of 90.

Born on July 1, 1935 in Ballinderreen, Co. Galway, Ireland, Mike was the seventh of Mary Bridget and Michael Lane’s eight children. After immigrating to New York in 1954, Mike enjoyed a vibrant Irish social life attending dances at many of the famed dance halls in New York at the time, including City Center and the Jaeger House. It was through the friends he made in this Irish community that he met Ellen, his beloved wife of 63 years.

Mike had a successful career working as a manager in supermarkets in the New York area and later as the proprietor of several businesses, including a bar in the town of Athenry, Co. Galway, a convenience store in Galway city and a couple of delicatessens in Williston Park and Merrick, New York.

Mike’s personality endeared him to the many people with whom he came in contact. He was charming, witty and always in good spirits. He loved a good conversation whether it be about his beloved GAA games or current events. He also loved to reminisce about the many wonderful people he grew up with and loved in his native home in Ireland.

Mike enjoyed his retirement doing what he loved most: spending time with all his great friends at the Irish American Center in Mineola; traveling to Ireland each summer to spend a couple months in Ireland meeting up with relatives and old friends and attending GAA games across the country; and spending time with his wife, children and grandsons. 

His Catholic faith was of utmost importance to him. Mike was a devout parishioner at Saint Aidan’s Catholic Church in Williston Park where he was an usher for many years. He attended daily masses for years both at St Aidan’s and when in Ireland at St. Coleman’s church in Ballinderreen.

Mike is survived by his wife Ellen, his children Anne and Michael, his son-in-law Tim, his three grandsons, Dylan, Liam and Ethan, and many beloved nieces, nephews, as well as grand nieces and nephews. He will be dearly missed.
