Obituary of Louise A. Hoch

Louise A Hoch, on March 20, 2025. She was predeceased by her husband of 73 years, Norman J Hoch. Survived by her five children and their spouses, Stephen (Karen), Diane Sankey (William), Kenneth (MaryEllen), Sharon Schmiemann (Matthew), and Matthew (Lorraine).

Born on April 13,1932 in Fall River, Massachusetts to Mary and Manual Amaral she was proud of her Portuguese American heritage. After moving to Queens NY in her early childhood was educated in the NYC public education system and graduated from Jamaica Vocational High School in 1949. After high school she met, dated and married Norman on August 26,1951. They lived in Florida for a brief time until our father’s discharge from the Air Force, then moving to their first home in South Ozone Park, Queens where they began and continued to raise their growing family.

Mom returned to the workforce in 1966 first serving as a school aide at John Adams High School until 1977. Joining the NYC Department of Social Services as a Clerical Aide, she rose through the ranks to a supervisory position eventually responsible for the performance of a staff of 30, until leaving City Service in 1985. She was known as a trustworthy, responsible, and extremely reliable employee.

She was an active parishioner at her first church, Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Richmond Hill, serving as a member of the Parish Council and the CYO Sports Program, as the Parish Athletic Representative for a number of years. After moving to New Hyde Park in 1991 she affirmed her commitment to her new parish, Notre Dame, by volunteering as a Catechist helping young parishioners with their pre-first holy communion studies.

To those who knew her during her younger years she was best described as “a force of nature” with an indomitable spirit, eager to help anyone she knew in any she could. Though she did slow down a bit in her last few years our “energizer bunny” continually bounced back from her increasing number of hospital stays.

As our mother, she was a genuine, honest, and loving woman, stern when necessary but fiercely supportive of her family, faith, country, and friends. She absolutely delighted in the lives of her 13 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren and was always eager to visit or be visited by any number of them at any time.

A Mass of Christian burial will take place on Thursday March 27th at Notre Dame Parish Church in New Hyde Park at 9:30 am. Burial service will follow at Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale New York.

In lieu of flowers donations in mom’s memory may be made to The Garden City Park Fire Department, 333 Marcus Avenue Garden City Park, NY 11040 or The FDNY Family Transport Unit at www.firefamilytransport.org
