Growing up during the depression was difficult for Rose and her family. The story she told most to her children was about buying her parents a living room set soon after she started working right after high school. That meant so much to Rose to help her parents. She loved to help others, and did selflessly for those she loved. She had a hugh heart. Later, even at age 86 she insisted on washing her daughter’s kitchen floor, while husband Stanley, age 92, was painting the bathroom, so what the heck?
Rose was a very strong willed person, extremely motivated and determined. She overcame many obstacles and accomplished a lot to create a beautiful life in Albertson 65 years ago. She loved Albertson so much with it’s special block Willow Place and her parish St Aidens. Last year, after watching the documentary “the Blue Zones” Rose said “I want to be a hundred.” She gave so much effort to make it through till the end.
Rose’s whole life was based around close family and special friends; and going to church and praying. That’s how she meet her husband Stanley on Manhattan Ave in Greenpoint, while walking to church with her mother and sister in 1949. She and Stanley shared the same. They always referred to themselves as “we”, not “I”. They were very social and loved company at home always welcoming family and friends.
Rose thrived on hosting summer family barbecues in the back yard, at Bar Beach, birthday parties, and Halloween too. Rose and Stanley were especially overjoyed with having grandkids. She always made the holidays wonderful, a big celebration with extended family became a cherished tradition. She brought her family together every day with home cooked dinners.
Mom and dad lite up when special friends visited. A close collage friend of Terry’s, Felicia, feels like a part of the family. There was much love in their happy and busy home. Rose always had a smile on her face.
In more recent years following her devastating loss of husband and son Paul, the incredibly caring relationship with daughter Terry nourished both, and kept Rose going. She was also comforted by Felicia’s loving friendship and visits. With Rose’s endless spirt they still celebrated, going to restaurants, beaches, social gatherings or sitting on the front porch, as Rose loved to experience life to the fullest with those she loved.
