Obituary of Brian L. Brennan
Born to Jack and Alice, South Bronx, New York. A loyal son and a beloved brother to siblings Terrence, Cassie, Eileen and Shawn. Loving husband to Maureen Brennan and dedicated father to sons, John and James. Uncle, cousin, team member, friend and inspiration to any fortunate enough to meet.
Brian’s adolescence at 282 E138th St, included fond memories of a wonderful community. His father, a union electrician and his mother, were 1st generation Irish Americans. He and his older siblings attended school at St Jerome’s church. At a young age, an accident blinded Brian in his left eye. Although debilitating and tragic, Brian never allowed that life altering event, to hold him back from achieving so very much.
In January of 1960, Brian’s family relocated to Williston Park, Long Island. Brian’s interests developed in outdoor activities such as the Boy Scouts and sports, such as basketball. Brian’s favorite sport was baseball to which his father coached. He developed a strong work ethic and a love for ice cream, when he took his first job at the Carvel on Hillside Ave, around the corner from his home. During this time, Brian met and cherished some of his most beloved, neighborhood friends.
In Fall of 1973, Brian was initiated into the Local 638, Steamfitters Union to which he would spend the next 40 years. Day to day work was long, exhausting and dangerous. But Brian was never one to shy away from a challenge and like his father, knew the promising future, unions could provide. Brian worked through a time of rapid, wide spread construction in the tri-state area. Work included large-scale, world-famous projects such as the United Nations, JFK and LaGuardia Airports, LIJ Hospital and the New World Trade Center. The Steamfitters were another family to Brian and he had tremendous pride for them.
In 1977 Brian began dating Maureen Kennedy, who later became his wife. They were happily married for the next 45 years. The couple worked and saved until they could afford to buy their first home in 1983 in Westbury, Long Island. The couple enjoyed dinner nights with the family and parties with friends. Trips to Hershey, PA and Montauk, NY, were their favorites. Maureen loved Brian’s sense of humor and was a dedicated and loving wife for the rest of his life.
In Sept 1988, Brian’s first son John was born. In November of 1991, his second son James was born. Always supported by their father, the boys developed similar interests with John being a basketball playing, boy scout. James played numerous sports but like his dad, he preferred baseball. As a dad Brian loved watching his boys play any sport and regardless of the work week he had, would attend every game and practice he could. Brian’s groundwork helped John to also become a steamfitter and provided James the ability to receive a college education in engineering. The boys idolized their father and truly appreciate the sacrifices he made for them.
Brian passed away Friday, January 31st 2025, after a long and exhausting battle with chronic conditions. Even in the face of pain and uncertainty, Brian maintained courage and always tried to make others happy. He was an unforgettable and greatly loved individual who will be dearly missed.
