Obituary of Richard Lionel Svitak
Richard "Richie" Svitak
November 5, 1937 – January 28, 2025
Richard "Richie" Svitak, a proud Navy veteran and longtime resident of Brentwood, NY, before retiring to Port St. Lucie, FL, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2025, at the age of 87.
Born in Manhattan, NY, on November 5, 1937, Richie was raised in New Hyde Park, NY. He served his country with honor in the United States Navy from 1955 to 1958, stationed aboard the USS Purdy (DD-734) out of Newport, Rhode Island. During his time at sea, he proudly became a Shellback after crossing the equator. Following active duty, he continued his service for six years (1961 and 1973 - 1977) in the Navy Reserves, serving on the USS Myles C. Fox (DD-829) and the USS Damato (DD-871).
In 1959, Richie married Myra Svitak, and together they built a life in Brentwood, NY, for 22 years. He dedicated 32 years of his career to the New York Telephone Company as a switchman after working in electronics at Grumman in Bethpage, NY. Upon retiring in 1992, he fulfilled his dream of moving to Florida, where he spent 32 wonderful years enjoying the sunshine.
Richie was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting in Connecticut and upstate New York, fishing and crabbing off the pier at Bay Shore Marina, and boating. He was happiest at the beach, soaking up the sun and enjoying the warmth of Florida’s weather. In retirement, he remained active in the community as a member of the American Legion and found joy in cruising to Bermuda and the waters off Key West.
Richie is survived by his sons, Danny and Troy, as well as his cherished grandchildren, Nicholas, Olivia, and Allison. He is also survived by his devoted daughter-in-law, Madeline, who is married to Troy. Richie leaves behind his beloved brothers, Kenneth and Allen, and his dear sister, Dorothy. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Fair winds and following seas, Richie. Your memory will live on in the hearts of those you touched.
