Michael Joseph O’Toole, 62, passed unexpectedly on Sunday, May 22, 2022 in Sarasota, Florida. Michael was a retired New York City Police Officer, on the force from 1984-2004, and spent several months post 9/11 working at Ground Zero. Michael was born in Tuam, County Galway, Ireland. He was raised by his parents in Portacloy, County Mayo and attended Summerhill College in Sligo for secondary school. In 1974, he won a gold medal in the British Open Wrestling Championship. Later that year, he traveled to Lima, Peru where he was ranked 4th in his weight class in the World Wrestling Championship. Michael spent two years in Clearwater, Florida to represent Clearwater High School on their wrestling team. He moved to New York and graduated from Bryant High School in Woodside. Michael married his late wife, Margaret O’Connell (1958-2011), and had one daughter, Mary Elizabeth. Michael served the city of New York while always keeping a connection and a home with his family in Portacloy, Ireland, his favorite place in the world. He had great faith and was generous to all. He is predeceased by his precious wife Margaret, father Tom, brother-in-law Kieran, and siblings Catherine, Martin, and Rodger. Beloved father to Mary Beth, son-in-law Chris, grandchildren, Ryan and Erin. Sadly missed by his partner Mary Ann, mother Mary, brother Thomas, sisters Maura, Patricia, Emer and Bernie, also his goddaughter. Sister-in-law Helen, brothers-in-law Tommy, Antoine and Christy. Aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, step niece and nephews, cousins, wide circle of friends and neighbors. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.
